According to the World Design Organization, industrial design “bridges the gap between what is and what’s possible”. This means it focuses on feasibility, function, and human-centered aesthetic while maintaining elegance and style. It’s an art and a science. And it’s beyond worth recognizing.
Let’s toast to our creatives. Join in celebrating a day that symbolizes beauty, efficiency, and functionality for the everyday human. Industrial designers are unique. Here’s to the day that we recognize their incredible and innovative successes.
The Beginning of the Celebration
For humans. By humans. With humans in mind. That’s the beauty of industrial design. And while this field started back in the beginning of the industrial revolution, the holiday was recognized less that 20 years ago.
In 2007, on the 50th anniversary of the World Design Organization, designers and design enthusiasts came together to celebrate industrial design’s impact on our daily lives. In many countries across the globe, this day became known as World Industrial Design Day.
This day gives industry professionals, colleagues, friends, and new spectators a safe space to inquire, explore, innovate, and express themselves in the name of design. Young creatives can decide if they’d like to pursue careers in the field, and seasoned designers can share their experiences and make a positive difference in their community. It’s a win-win. Plus, every year has a different focus, and that means we have more opportunities to have progressive discussions. Appropriately, this year’s topic addresses diversity in the design industry.
Join in on World Industrial Design Day
We’re coming together. Within the last 14 years, over 50 events have been held in 25+ countries, and those numbers continue to rise. Between increasing visibility for the industrial design industry and having necessary discussions about how design professions affect our world, there’s no better time to get in on the celebration. Right now, people all around the world are waiting to learn, appreciate, and explore what industrial design has to offer. You could be next.
Ready to show support and raise awareness in your town? There are plenty of ways to get involved. (And if you’re too late for certain events, don’t worry – there’s always next year!)
